We begin by exploring the linkages between two highly interdependent concepts: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Socially Responsible Investment (SRI). Following an in-depth analysis of corporate ESG ratings and impact measurement, students will create their own Sustainable Investment Portfolios, including risk/return analysis. Students will also discover the evolution, achievements and critiques of the micro-finance and impact investing sectors. In addition, we will propose measures to promote expansion of the industry (i.e. government policies, modification of investment funds’ fiduciary duty, more appropriate impact measurement of firms’ activities). This course will run from January 21st through March 18th.

Learning Outcomes

  1. To investigate the origins of socially responsible investing, and how contributed to the growth of this asset class.
  2. To understand the main sustainable investment vehicles: socially responsible investing and shareholder activism, green bonds, micro finance, and impact investing.
  3. To comprehend basic corporate finance concepts, such as net present value and portfolio theory.
  4. To actively use corporate ESG ratings to create a sustainable portfolio.
  5. To work and learn collaboratively.
  6. To critically analyse scholarly articles in the sustainable asset management field.
  7. To reflect on the viability and growth potential of the various sustainable investment vehicles studied within this module.
